World Mental Health Day 2013!!

It's October 10 in Australia right now and that means it is world mental health day.

This is an annual initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health.

In Australia this year the campaign is based around the idea of people taking responsibility for their own mental health. The campaign slogan is "mental health begins with me".

It's main objectives are;
- encourage help seeking behaviour
- reduce the stigma associated with mental illness
- Foster connectivity through communities

Now, I do think the premise for this years campaign is somewhat problematic. It seems to take away from the seriousness of mental illness, by presenting it as something which can be controlled by the individual. I think the idea of taking responsibility for your own mental health can be very difficult for people already in the grips of a severe mental illness and can be very triggering for these people.

While I do not believe in taking all responsibility away from the individual, I think a campaign such as this should use less 'blaming' language. Mental illness is not your fault. It is no ones fault. Any efforts to reduce stigmatisation should make this point very clear.

People need to understand than no one chooses mental illness. It is not fun or  glamorous. People with mental illness' are not trying to seek attention. They are ill. They are struggling and because of the stigma, they would much rather keep it hidden until it eats them alive. Literally.

I think the objectives of this campaign are great. Fostering connectivity through communities, encouraging help seeking behaviour and reducing stigma are excellent and much needed goals. However, when combined with the slogan "mental health begins with me" and the notion of encouraging people to take responsibility for their own mental health, I think it has a very damaging message. It suggests that people have control over whether or not they develop a mental illness or whether or not they recover. This is not always the case. Much of the time people are too scared or too damaged to seek help because of the stigma associated with having a mental illness.

More focus needs to be given to reducing the stigma, improving education and awareness and making mental health services more accessible.

As blogger, mental health activist and father to two children suffering severe mental illness, Michael Schofield wrote "we cannot go into their minds and 'fix' them. But we can fix the world so they can live in it." (January First, Prologue)

Until next time :) xx

September Her Fashion Box!

Last week I received my very first Her Fashion Box.

Her Fashion Box is a new Australian subscription service. It costs $39.95 per month and you receive three fashion items and at least four deluxe beauty samples.

You also get the choice of three style profiles to suite your tastes: Classic, Trendy and Feminine.

There is also a smaller version, the boxette which costs $24.95 per month.

The theme of the September box was "clutch on" and I chose the feminine box.

What's inside??

1. Her Fashion Box Glamour Glimmer clutch: Gorgeous little clutch bag covered in navy blue sequins. Dark metal hardware and strap. RRP: $39.95

2. Her Fashion Box Warm Glow ID Bracelet: This was probably my favourite item in this box. It's rose gold. really chunky and very trendy at the moment. RRP: $29.95

3. Her Fashion Box Kiss From a Rose Ring: This is also gorgeous. Rose gold, adorable heart pattern with diamontes. It bends to suit different size fingers. RRP: $24.95

4. Maybelline Colour Show nail varnish in Coral Crush: Great colour for spring. RRP: $5.95

5. Maybelline Colour Show nail varnish in Blue Freeze: a navy blue polish with specks of glitter through it. RRP: $5.95

6. Designer Brands Chubby Lipstick Crayon in Kiss & Tell Red: I actually really love this colour and the formula seems really nice, which is a surprise for DB cosmetics. RRP: $7.99

7. Designer Brands Kohl eye pencil in Black: I've tried these before and actually don't like them very much so that was a little disappointing. But I guess that's kind of the point of these subscription boxes - to try different products etc. RRP: $4.99.

8. C2 Collagen firming & moisturising facial mask: I LOVE facial masks so I'm excited to try this one out soon! RRP: $29 for five masks

9. PureTAN Pure Moisture Coconut Body Creme Body Scrub (12ml sample): This smells really good and I've never heard of this brand before so I'm looking forward to trying this soon as well. It has the perfect scent for summer! RRP: $12.95 (65ml) or $27.95 (125ml)

Overall I was a little disappointed with this box. It was great value because it contained 9 products, which is really good for a subscription service however, I think it would have been better with fewer, better quality products. I'm not a huge fan of Designer Brands, who were the beauty sponsor this month.

I also don't think it was particularly feminine in nature. The navy blue clutch isn't something I would normally choose and wasn't really what I was expecting.

I am going to give it another go though, and I'm hoping it will be better next month!

If you want to sign up to get the October box you can do so here.

Until next time :) xx

This month the box was sponsored by DURI and contained the following AMAZEBALLS spring fashion items!!

2. FaB Aztec print scarf: Gorgeous orange, green, blue, red Aztec print, very trendy and perfect for spring and summer. RRP: $24.95

3. DURI nail enamel in 599 Call Me Maybe: This nail polish is a gorgeous neon peach colour, which will, once again be perfect for spring! RRP: $18 (15ml)

4. DURI nail enamel in 112S Pie in the Sky Green: another gorgeous spring colour - mint green. I can't wait to combine these two nail colours and create some really pretty designs! RRP: $18 (15ml)

5. FaB Tassel necklace: This is a gorgeous, long statement necklace in gold and pink. RRP: $19.95

6. FaB Mint green watch (Geneva watches): I absolutely love this watch. It's a beautiful mint green colour with rose gold hardware. So pretty!! RRP: $29.95

Overall all I am so impressed with this box and have already subscribed to continue receiving them! The items are all gorgeous and perfect for spring and it is definitely worth the $35!!! Amazing value!
I would definitely recommend this fashion and beauty box!

Until next time :) xx

Summer is coming...

... So I did a little online shopping! haha

This first order is from www.boohoo.com.
It was my first time ordering from them and I have to say I am impressed.

The quality of the clothes is really nice. The clothes are inexpensive and fit really well.

I would recommend going a size smaller if your in between sizes as they do run a little big, which is actually a nice change :)

These are the things I got.

Tracy Chiffon and Crochet Skirt, Pink: $22.00 View

Imogen Feather Print Heart Back Skater Dress, Mint: $22.00 View

Nina Bright Zig Zag Jersey Maxi Dress: $26.00 View

What are your must haves for the upcoming summer season?

Until next time :) xx
